In the High Court, Telegram has challenged the restrictions imposed pursuant to the directions issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The decision was taken following recommendations by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
The central government has put a temporary restriction on Telegram’s operations in India until June 22. This covers the examination day (June 21) and its immediate aftermath.
The decision was taken as part of efforts to prevent alleged paper leaks, misinformation campaigns and cheating networks.
Earlier, NTA stated that the temporary restriction became necessary after other measures, such as channel-specific takedowns and enforcement actions, were found insufficient to address the matter.
Besides restricting access to the platform, the concerned authorities have even directed Telegram to disable its message-editing feature in India till June 30, with the NTA claiming that the feature was earlier misused to create fabricated evidence of question paper leaks by editing older messages and further replacing these attachments while retaining the original timestamp.
Meanwhile, Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov has criticised the temporary suspension on X.
He claimed that the platform had already removed hundreds of channels in recent weeks that were allegedly involved in sharing leaked examination materials.
